Restoring the past, building the future
160 Great Portland Street
Main Contractor: BW Interiors, Fit out Contractor Stortford Interiors
Architect: MCM (Fit Out)

When Hillaldam Coburn Ltd was approached by the architectural ironmonger who had won the fittings tender for the refurbishment of 160 Great Portland Street we knew the architect’s choice of Coburn Flat Track would look wonderfully contemporaneous against the historical façade of the iconic building.

The building was completely refurbished for its new tenants; Double negative, an Oscar winning visual effects company based in London who are responsible for the cutting edge special effects on feature films such as Ironman, Harry Potter and Batman amongst others.

The Joinery works within this scheme were primarily laminate faced sliding doors in a variety of eye-catching colours, with exposed birch ply lipping's. In keeping with the scheme, the perfect balance of old and new was achieved by using the retro Coburn Flat Track system with these brightly coloured doors.

A straight sliding system which can take doors of up to 360kg, the Coburn Flat Track styling dates back to the turn of the century when it was used in warehouses and in industrial settings. Today the highly stylised look is perfect for unique interior applications.

This scheme went to great lengths to tailor the redevelopment to provide a building which suits perfectly the tenant's business and as such became a Regional Winner of the Corporate Workplace Awards for its combined merits of its base build and fit out.

Luxury Apartments at Froyle Park

Steeped in history, and located only a couple of hours outside London in the North-East Hampshire village of Froyle, this unique Manor House, surrounded by thick woods and sprawling country meadows, is the perfect setting.   Froyle Park offers 14 self contained residential apartments, all designed to reflect the nostalgic refinement of the Manor House’s Jacobean architecture.

In keeping with the luxurious décor within the apartments, Coburn Flat Track was chosen when the apartments were recently refurbished.

The Coburn Flat Track is a system designed to be noticed and the rustic style finish of the gear complemented the interiors perfectly. Supplied in this instance in kit form, each of the 18 sets contained everything that was needed to ensure the doors could be hung with the minimum of fuss ensuring the tight schedule was kept to and down time was kept to a minimum.

The Coburn Flat Track is available in a range of finishes including weathered and stainless steel and systems can take single or double doors of up to 360kg.

Dictator Door Checks stop slamming doors

When Laidlaw Solutions Ltd contacted us with regard to slamming doors in Ford Open Prison, we knew we could help. Our Dictator range of Door Dampers provide noiseless control of the closing of doors.

Dictator Door Dampers catch a door just before it slams shut and pull it quietly and safely to a completely closed position. For this reason they were ideal for Ford Open Prison where sound reduction and safety is paramount.

We decided that the Z1000 series of dampers would be the best option for this application. The Z1000 series is particularly suitable for lightweight interior doors due to the damper’s small size. They can be used on flush, overlapping or recessed doors thanks to their different hooks and the best value models of all Dictator Door Dampers.

Dictator tests their Door Dampers to 1 Million cycles without any problems whatsoever so you can be assured that you can put a stop to slamming doors for good.

A safer space for care home residents

In 2013 we were approached by Castleoak for advice on how to maximise space in their latest project; Freemantle Court. Castleoak; a developer working exclusively in the care sector have the highest reputation in developing care homes and care villages. They wanted to maximise the space within the 90-bed care home which provides residential, nursing and specialist dementia care and ensure residents had the space to move freely and retain their independence when using the en suite bathrooms.

With this in mind, Coburn suggested our Hideaway Pocket Door gear. A system suitable for pocket doors of up to 90kg, it has ball bearing nylon hangers to ensure an extremely smooth running movement, imperative when it comes to those who are less able to open a heavy door.

With kits that take doors up to 1524mm wide and 2743mm high, we were able to provide a suitable kit for each single and double opening.

A key feature of the Hideaway Pocket Door gear is the detachable hanger locking clip, which in the event of an emergency allows the door to be removed by unclipping at the top. This coupled with the Hideaway’s ability to take the weight of a 30 min rated fire door covered the safety aspects of the build. In fact Castleoak were so pleased with them system that they went on to use the Hideaway Pocket Door gear on two further sites!
